The Fourfits., a quartet of sisters from Camden, successfully entertained the crowds and star-studded judging panel in the final London round last month and are now set on winning the title of the UK’s best unsigned act of 2012. They have already beaten over 10,000 acts who entered the competition in live heats across the country, and will now perform on the main stage at Proud2 at The O2, in a full day festival showcasing the best acts from allgenres.
The winning act of Live and Unsigned 2012 will embark on a remarkable festival tour this summer spanning 14 top festivals across the UK including; Sundown, Strawberry Fields Festival, Cloud 9 Festival, Glass Butter Beach, Brownstock, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In addition to the Live and Unsigned festival tour the winning act will receive a £10,000 cash prize.
The Fourfits. started in 2002, but as a family they have learnt piano and string instruments from childhood. Winning the competition would finally achieve recognition for something they have been working on together since drummer, and youngest sister Alice picked up her sticks. Charlie, the oldest sister and guitarist, who now works full-time as well as practicing, says: “We’ve been playing together for nearly 10 years to produce rock music that people can dance to. It’s hard to get all of us together at four different stages of life, but we’ve put a lot of sweat and tears into this competition, and treated it no differently from another gig – because you never know who is out there watching.” The other members of the band are Harriet, the lead singer and bassist who gets audiences on their feet, and Becky the keyboardist who can’t wait to play more live festivals: “The £10,000 would mean that we could record our album this Autumn, but there is nothing better than live music so I hope we get to play some of the brilliant festivals”.
Live and Unsigned is the biggest original music competition in the UK for unsigned bands and artists. It has set itself apart from its predecessors by promoting originality. Chris Grayston, Director of Live & Unsigned commented: “We’re all about originality, live ability and credibility. It’s a fantastic achievement to make it to the Grand Final at The O2, one of the best music venues in the world. Last year half a dozen acts were signed to both label and management companies, after representatives were invited as guests!” The Fourfits. certainly are original as a band of four sisters but they have been noticed for their musicality. Ben Price, Head of A&R at Future Music, who was one of the judges that put the foursome through on judges votes said they “have a bright future ahead of them. Not many girl bands possess the attitude and musical ability they have. They’re extremely marketable and will be a contender in the Grand Final”. The Fourfits. have played a different original song at every stage of the competition. A personal favourite for Harriet the lead singer was the second round at Dingwalls Camden, where they mashed their own song, “Maximilian”, a personification of three industries designed to make money by exploiting others, with the iconic “Killing in the name of” by “Rage against the machine”: “the songs just go together and the crowd in Camden were fantastic – it’s definitely a performance we’ll remember”. For this round they will play their most popular song to date “Never Go Home Alone”, which has already been featured on the NME website. The final will take place in front of anticipated A&R guests and celebrity judges. In the past this has included former Slade front man Noddy Holder, The deceased legend Malcolm McLaren, Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale, Tom Deacon and Daniel P Carter. Already confirmed for this year’s Grand Final are Radio 1’s DJ Target and Kiss FM Breakfast presenter Charlie Hedges and Kerrang’s Alex Baker returning for his third year.
